WESTPORT POSTER GALLERY OPENS NEW MADISON AVE LOCATION

The Ross Vintage Poster Gallery, located at 571 Riverside Avenue, Westport, announces the grand opening of a spacious new gallery located in the heart of Manhattan at 532 Madison Avenue, on November 15. A gala celebration for neighbors, art enthusiasts and corporate art buyers will be announced soon.

Offering one of the widest selections of original international vintage posters in the nation, in addition to in-home consultation, full custom framing and installation, the gallery has also expanded its online database at www.rossvintageposters.com to include unique descriptions of individual works of art.

Featuring the works of such artists as Cappiello, Cheret and Constant Duval, these original posters spanning 1890 to 1980, are in mint condition and conservation-backed on museum quality, acid-free linen to preserve their historic value.

Posters first emerged more than 100 years ago in Paris as eye-catching advertisements of a product or vacation spot. Although many art lovers of the day understood they were witnessing true works of art, these posters—printed on fragile newsprint—were either discarded or destroyed by the passage of time. Few remaining vintage posters have survived in good condition, while demand for these treasures has escalated over recent years. Thankfully, 21st Century restoration technology now allows vintage graphic artwork to survive for the enjoyment of future generations.

As an investment for savvy collectors, on average vintage poster prices have increased at 10 – 20 percent each year with some doubling in value within six months. But most who purchase these collectibles do so because they have a passion for their brilliance.

Founded in 1996 by Mickey Ross—an entrepreneur with his own textile company, The Ross Vintage Poster Gallery grew from his passion for this tantalizing art form created by Toulouse-Lautrec and other world-class artists of the period. Their work is characterized by fanciful images of high society and leisure time, often featuring beautiful women and far away destinations. The first poster gallery opened in Paris in the 1890s and interest in collecting original posters has peaked over the past decade.

“New collectors are responding to the fact that these colorful works are very aesthetically pleasing,” says Mickey. “They're still affordable—many choice items are $3,000 to $10,000—and in today's homes, where the design trend is towards larger and larger spaces, even greater sized posters work very well.”

Mickey’s wife Jodi has joined the gallery, bringing with her years of experience and enthusiasm in both design and retail. With their roots planted firmly in Westport for more than a decade, the couple has traveled throughout Europe to find original posters showcasing whimsical, colorful images— including those of impish harlequins and scantily clad dancers from the Follies Bergeres, which capture the rebellious spirit of the era.

The Ross’ are considered leading experts in the field of Original Vintage Posters. Their unsurpassed knowledge and zeal for this charming art form can now be experienced at two convenient locations.

Additionally, Mickey Ross serves as president of International Vintage Posters Dealer’s Association (IVPDA) founded by a group of highly respected poster dealers from North America and Europe.

Mickey Ross
Bio

As President of The Ross Vintage Poster Gallery, Mickey Ross is one of the country’s leading international vintage poster dealers and an expert on the subject of poster art and its historic preservation.

Hailing from Montreal, Quebec, Mickey earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University and a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. His professional career began as a stylist and merchant of printed textile designs in Canada and later in the United States where he began his own business—Rosstex Fabrics, Inc., almost 30 years ago. It was in the textile business that Mickey’s passion for the art form was ignited.

In the early 1980’s, Mickey began to study and collect the art of the Original Vintage Poster. His interest remained a hobby for more than a decade until he sold his textile company in 1995 and boldly changed career paths to become a vintage poster dealer. Mickey says he feels fortunate to have transformed his pastime into a thriving business.

“Posters are a sheer delight,” says Mickey. “They're all about history and the telling of wonderful stories.”

During the mid 1990s, Mickey began distributing the work of the artist known as Razzia. Over the course of their business relationship, Mickey and Razzia often discussed the possibility of presenting the artist’s compositions in an historical perspective, allowing his aficionados the opportunity to view his entire body of work. The fruitful outcome of these heartfelt talks blossomed into a book titled Razzia – 25 Years of Poster Art, the first published work of Mickey Ross, reflecting his commitment and enthusiasm for poster art.

In fact, Mickey’s extensive knowledge of world history, coupled with his love of culture and command of several languages compliments his skills as a businessman.

“The best part about these posters is that you can own a piece of original artwork from an important period in history,” says Mickey. “These are not reproductions—you are touching the real thing, expertly restored and preserved.”

The Ross Vintage Poster Gallery operates: www.rossvintageposters.com an advanced database of their vast inventory—featuring more than 3,000 original pieces, and includes unique descriptions of individual works of art. Additionally, Mickey Ross serves as Membership Chairman of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association (IVPDA) founded by a group of highly respected poster dealers from North America and Europe.

Mickey and his wife Jodi, who works by his side in the business, are the parents of three children — Libby, Stephen and Adam.
